Keep Salado Beautiful History
Pride of place has always been a characteristic of Salado, and 2008 was no different for a group of folks working with Salado Tourism. Each had a different focus, one was invested in bringing more visitors to town, several were passionate about recycling and the environment, and others were more focused on beautification. This group formed around an idea to affiliate with Keep Texas Beautiful and established Keep Salado Beautiful. We were officially chartered in January 2009 and worked out of the Tourism office with zero budget, operating on total volunteer effort. Our first project was to develop a recycling drop-off at the Village office. This was so successful, that it out grew the location and we relocated to an empty lot behind a Board member’s business. The Salado Recycling Center consisted of an empty truck trailer provided by Temple Iron and Metal. Volunteers maned the station every Saturday morning for the public to drop off their paper, plastic and glass.
The revenue from recycling, along with community donations, funded our beautification efforts for several years. We landscaped the center of the circle drive at the Recycling Center, but our first real project was at the center of town, the Green Bridge Garden. This was the beginning of the Pocket Garden project that has defined Keep Salado Beautiful. From trash to beauty, that is the story of KSB.
Special appreciation to our first Board Members: Kim Bird, Debbie Charbonneau, Terry Crain, Becky Denton, Karen Kinnison, Will Lowery, Tibish Meyers, Lynette Reed, Sheryl Russell, Jill Shipman, Carol Strong, Susan Terry and Mayor Merle Stalcup. An amazing number of volunteer hours along with support of the community, an incredible amount of effort and creativity, and generous donors have brought us forward ten years. Take a walk! Enjoy the gardens! Realize how much more can be done and join us.
